Methylated spirits fox tail8/24/2023 ![]() If you get 99.9% pure methanol it is a very clean solvent that will leave behind no residue at all and will evaporate quickly. Wear rubber gloves, use it in a ventilated area, don't get it on your skin and don't breathe the fumes. However methanol is poisonous so it should be used with care. This you may find from an optics supplier like a camera shop or a telescope shop. For optics, methanol is often chosen as a cleaning fluid. I really wouldn't want to use this as a high purity solvent, but in any case it doesn't dissolve solder flux so it's of little use for cleaning circuit boards. What you find instead is denatured alcohol, which is ethanol mixed with some gasoline and other adulterants to make it undrinkable. In the USA methylated spirits is rarely found. It should be a fairly clean solvent but the dye and bitter substance could be left behind as a residue when it evaporates. Methylated spirits is ethanol mixed with some methanol to make it poisonous, a bitter substance to make it undrinkable, and a purple dye to warn you what it is. Pure anhydrous alcohol >99.9% would also be a clean solvent except you can't obtain it outside of a chemical laboratory and in any case it does not dissolve flux or grease very well. The IPA in my cleaning supplies is >99.9% pure and it should evaporate with no residue. IPA is quite good at cleaning greasy marks, fingerprints, solder flux etc, from glass, circuit boards, tape heads and optics. Methylated spirit or denatured alcohol is a solvent comprised of 90 ethanol, 10 methanol, and other chemicals such as isopropyl alcohol, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, and methyl isobutyl ketone. Methylated spirits is predominantly ethanol, whereas IPA is predominantly isopropyl alcohol. The result is a fairly spectaclar display piece - it's about 20 inches long - and will hopefully be noticed and admired for some while to come. They are different solvents with different dissolving properties. I have read that you can 'cure' a foxes tail using Methylated (sp) Spirits. ![]() Most people prefer using either turpentine, white spirit or methylated spirit, but the choice is yours, really. Just like when we discussed white spirit and methylated spirits all those words ago, turpentine and white spirit can be used for the same tasks. He agreed, so I treated the rust, rubbed it down and primed it, followed by resprays of paint, then varnish. Turpentine is a solvent made from tree resin, and white spirit is a petroleum-based solvent. Edgar Allan Poe Serpents and spiders, tail of a rat, call in the spirits, wherever theyre. So I called the owner and suggested a full repaint, pointing out that this was unlikely to affect the value of an example in this rather sorry state of repair. funny tweaker sayings Bottle of methylated spirit please. ![]() The condition was just too poor.Īs it happened, I had some gold enamel paint that was, by experiment, a strikingly precise match for the original finish. In order to respect the car - and in line with my original quote - I was then going to 'weather' my new parts to match the worn and corroded surfaces of the rest, using various paint techniques.īut it occurred to me that the resulting very worthy - but rather dowdy - model would never likely be displayed or viewed much again. This left the wheel tyres, of course, which were slowly built up using epoxy putty, in an iterative process of filling, smoothing and filling. I also wrote a series of instructions so it can be safely used again. Anyhow, this required gently working free then a thorough cleaning and lubrication - especially the safety valve! - plus a bit of tightening up here and there, to get working again. That's the reason one is only supposed to use distilled water in models like this. Ethyl alcohol, commonly called ethanol or grain alcohol, is the alcohol found in adult beverages. The engineering on this model is superb but the drive cylinders were seized up with a sort of calcium residue, as one might find in a kettle. Methylated spirit, also known as denatured alcohol, is a mixture of ethyl and methyl alcohols. It is a 'live steam' model meaning it must be filled with water and heated up by a small spirit burner which runs on methylated spirits, rather like the much more recent 'Mamod' engines. ![]() The crazed paintwork is diagnostic for date. I was able to identify this locomotive - the internet is a wonderful thing - as a model by German company, Gebruder Bing (the Bing brothers) of Nuremburg, dating to about 1906. This model steam locomotive was part of a large collection of trains brought in by a customer who hoped to get them all running again, for the first time in some decades.
